How to play PinkyColor

Reading is automatic; ignoring the written word is not.

Look at the ink

Focus on the colour used to display the word.

Ignore the text

The word usually names a different colour to distract you.

Answer

Choose one of the four buttons before the 30 seconds run out.

Should I choose the colour named by the word?

No. Answer with the visual colour of the letters, even when the word says something else.

Do errors carry a penalty?

Yes. Every error subtracts 25 points from the final score.

What is the Stroop effect?

It is the interference that occurs when a word’s meaning and its ink colour do not match.

How this Stroop test works

PinkyColor is inspired by the Stroop effect, a classic demonstration of selective attention. The brain tends to read words automatically, but here the correct answer is the ink colour rather than the colour named by the word.

The challenge lasts thirty seconds and works with a touchscreen or mouse. It is not a clinical test: it is an attention and speed mini-game for practising concentration and comparing results for fun.
